And we're talking white evangelicalism here. One is theologically, and one is culturally. You talk about sort of two ideas of evangelicalism. KURTZLEBEN: Well, we should get into definitions there. And also, of course, in terms of the election of Donald Trump, white evangelicals were his most stalwart supporters, both in 2016, in 2020 and throughout his entire presidency. And this has been really since the 1960s, particularly 1970s and crystallized in the election of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.Īnd so what we see is conservative Republican values have absolutely served to shape the Republican Party platform for several decades now, and Republicans know that well and cater to a conservative Republican value system. But politically, even, I think it's fair to say that white evangelicals punch above their weight because evangelicals have been extremely mobilized politically and have particularly been mobilized within the Republican Party and to support Republican politics. First of all, depending on how we define evangelicals, evangelicals do make up a pretty large percent of the American population, somewhere between, like, 12, 13%, all the way up to 25, 26%. Tell us, how would you describe to an outsider to American politics the role, the importance that white evangelicals play in American politics?ĭU MEZ: Sure. KURTZLEBEN: So for our listeners who might not have read it yet, let's just start very simply. Kristin is professor of history at Calvin University.

It's a chance for our listeners to connect over books about politics, and people connected in the Facebook group. So for this special episode, we are taking that on for our book club. It traces that history from the early 20th century through the election of Donald Trump and then some.

It looks at the history of American white evangelicalism, both theologically and politically, and particularly through the lens of masculinity. This time, we are talking to Kristin Kobes Du Mez, author of "Jesus And John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted A Faith And Fractured A Nation." It's a genuinely fascinating book. And today, another installment in our regular book club series, where we on the podcast and you listeners read a book together and discuss it in our podcast Facebook group. I'll keep you up to date more regularly and will add some photos soon.(SOUNDBITE OF THE BIGTOP ORCHESTRA'S "TEETER BOARD: FOLIES BERGERE (MARCH AND TWO-STEP)") We really do live in a neat part of the state. I don't expect we'll see a bear anytime soon, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities. We have a variety of birds around the house. It really is neat to see a doe and her two fawns walk past the house regularly each afternoon. really kept it feeling like we were camping. That and using the cooler as our refrigerator and the grill for cooking. I went down to the creek a few times to fill buckets so that we could use the toilets. Our neighbor let us use their path to the creek. The bottled water was fine, but we couldn't waste it on the toilets. so we stockpiled several gallons before we moved. we new that we would need plenty of bottled water. With no power at all and everything being run on electricity. Now we are on the outskirts of a little railroad town in the mountains. But where we moved to has a lot less people than the bustling port city that we left. haha The pioneers who settled out West did so under much different circumstances and with much less comforts than we did. It was a real load off our minds how quickly it all went.Īfter a few days without power in the new place, the lights eventually came back on, but I tell you what. On both ends we all made quick work of the loading and unloading. The whole effort showed us how wonderful our friends and family are.

Friends helped us load the truck and my dad and his wife helped us unload when we arrived on July 4th. the power was still out at our new place and the temperature outside was hovering right around one-hundred degrees. We moved into a rather rural part of the state where a strong windstorm had swept through nearly a week earlier. It has been nearly two weeks since my wife and I made our move to the other side of the state.
